Montana Spring Fly Fishing Specials

Springtime Specials

This Spring fly fishing in Montana is predicted to be awesome! As temperatures rise, so does the feeding activity of trout on the Beaverhead, Big Hole, Madison and Jefferson Rivers.

Nymphing and streamers are always productive, but trout really start looking up when they get their first taste of Skwala’s during spring squalls.  Since this is the first hatch of the year, substantial size trout tend to key on them quickly. This, along with hatches of Baetis, and March Browns, and you have a dry-fly smorgasborg with rainbows and browns line up under foam lines to chow down….making for some great dry fly fishing!!

Why fish Montana this spring?

While spring time is a little chillier for fly fishing in Montana, it’s pure bliss.

  • Dry flies: Skawala’s, Beatis and March Brown’s are all hatching at this time of year.
  • No crowds: It is not uncommon to fly fish the entire day without encountering another angler.
  • Water conditions: Pre runoff is typically low and clear.
  • Hungry wild trout: Uneducated fish that haven’t seen a fly in months are eager to eat.
  • No Bugs: Pesky biting bugs like mosquitoes are non-existent.

Please note: Your Montana fishing license is not included but can be purchased on-line @ www.fwp.mt.gov
